ARTISTS

John Georgakopoulos

img002.jpg

Always had a love of music, all types of music. "Any music can be good if performed with a sense of passion and conviction. It’s about actually believing the story and conveying that in the storytelling."

It all began with a bite sized Casio keyboard you’d find in your local electrical shop, you know the ones. After the initial excitement of bashing all the buttons and keys wore off he soon realised that there must be more to this than simple button pressing and told his father he wanted to learn. That was 1993, the beginning of the lifelong journey of discovery, learning, friendship and entertainment.

Fast forward to today and music has become a way of life, a religion if you will for this individual with many disciplines (Bouzouki, Clarinet, Vocals) and traditions (Laiko, Dimotiko, Rebetiko, Edexno, Moderno).

Surrounding himself with the right people, Anagennisi has become a platform for John and his fellow musicians to preach the disciplines and traditions they hold dear the only way they know how, through music.

Dimitrios Kakaletris

Transient

It was at the age of four and a half, when listening to some music his father was playing, he first heard the famous Greek singer Stelios Kazantzidis. This sparked his love affair with the Greek 'Laiko Tragoudi'.

30 years from that life changing day and by a twist of fate he met John (aged 17 and already an accomplished musician) who was playing bouzouki and he played him an old Kazantzidis song (Εξω απ άδικο), they made an instant connection. It is then he realised that being half his age, John had the same passion for the music as he did, and so started a friendship and partnership to bring back to life, the old laiko music.

Over the next few years with guitar in hand, practising almost every day, all those years of listening and learning the best of that era, everything finally fell into place. With the addition of an old friend (Jim) song by song Anagennisi found its balance and Dimitri his place within it.

Jim Soubalov

Transient

Born in Australia Jim has had the passion for the laiko music for over thirty five years.

He began playing the accordion at the early age of eight, then moved on to keyboards as the laiko music began to evolve in a different direction within the 70’s and 80’s.

He combines his personal style of music unlike any other musician.   Bands in the past only wanted him to play the keyboards, as the accordion was seen as an obsolete instrument.  This led him to leave the music scene for about five years.  He was excited when Anagennisi approached him to join the band, particularly knowing the style of music, influences and the beliefs held by the members.  Returning to the accordion and its natural sound has made him have a deeper connection and love for the laiko sound of music.

David Dimkopoulos

david

David has been a part of Anagennisi since 2006. His love and dedication towards the music and the performance is unsurpassed.

From his early beginnings on drums, Dave has now found his rhythmic place combining the use of percussive instruments such as toumberleki (darbuka) and defi.
